Francis Chan Balance Beam Video

Here is the video that I mentioned in Sunday School this morning.

As I watched this the other day, God took it a step further in my mind. I think some of us do cling to the balance beam. But others of us are trying to do a full routine for God. Everything He puts in front of us we tackle with gusto. Then something happens.

Life throws us for a loop.

The perfect life we'd been living is suddenly shaken to our core. Then we get up to do that skill again, and we can't. We now have a mental block because our mind tells us we'll get hurt again. And God watches, waiting and encouraging. He says, "You can." We say, "I can't." And in the process we lose the ability to live the full life He has for us. Until we can climb up on that balance beam, dust the chalk off, and trust Him to catch us if we try and fall again.

The last few weeks, the Sunday School class using the Beth Moore Esther study has been powerful. You can view the trailer here.

As with most of her studies, I am learning things I never anticipated. I love the way she has us dive into the Bible and pull it apart. And then think about what it must have been like. But the reason I'm writing about this is because Sunday we watched the 4th video session. The text focused on Esther's words "If I perish, I perish."

This study has talked a lot about destiny and stepping into the callings God has on our lives. Rich, deep, challenging thoughts and questions. But this session tackled fear. Who doesn't live in fear? As an author and an attorney, sometimes I think I'm super-hardwired for the WHAT IFs of life. What if something happens to my husband? What if something happens to one of my children? What if? What if? What if?

I am still processing the message and plan to watch it again. Wouldn't it be amazing to live in a place where it doesn't matter what our WHAT IFs and fears are. Because if _______ happens, then God will ___________.

Esther Study

This week is a in-depth study of Esther chapter one. A few questions to consider as you read it:

what was the timing and political climate of the story?
Who attended Xerxes' banquet?
what are three possible reasons Vashti might have refused Xerxes' order?
What did Memucan advise the king to do?
How might the thought that "it's tough being a woman in another woman's shadow" Have proved true to the wives all over Persia.

Fireproof the Movie

My friend Gina Conroy had the opportunity to attend the screening for Fireproof this summer, and the above is her interview with the lead actress and movie producer. It was fun to get this email from her, because on Sunday our small group decided that we are going to work through Love Dare as a group this fall. We also talked about going to the movie opening weekend, which is September 26.

The Love Dare is a book that walks couples through specific projects they can do for 40 days to turn love into action. A challenge that every marriage can use no matter how new or experienced, how troubled or blissful.

Fasting Focus this Week

At the women's retreat, Traci Coursey shared some tips and strategies for fasting with us. One of the resources she directed us to is Jentezen Franklin's website: http://www.jentezenfranklin.org/quicktips.html. From his website, here are the list of reasons one should consider fasting that Pastor Ted highlighted yesterday during the service:

Why should I fast?

Are you in need of healing or a miracle?
Do you need the tender touch of God in your life?
Is there a dream inside you that only He can make possible?
Are you in need of a fresh encounter?
Do you desire a deeper, more intimate and powerful relationship with the Lord?
Are you ready to have heightened sensitivity to the desires of God?
Do you need to break away from bondages that have been holding you hostage?
Is there a friend or loved one that needs Salvation?
9. Do you desire to know God's will for your life?

Next Bible Study...time to decide

Last night at the women's Bible study we started discussing potential topics/books for our next study. Here are three we are considering. We need to make a decision in the next two weeks, so now's the time to weigh in if you have ideas on a book or a leader.

One option that appealed to several of us is No Other Gods by Kelly Minter. It is an eight-week study that is described to be for young women, but appealed to many of us looking at the little information I had about it. I have ordered a copy of the book and will bring it to church when it arrives. It's designed to be an in-home study with groups of 6 people, so we'd change our approach a bit for it, but that could be a good thing. :-)

Another option is Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. Clicking on the link will take you to CBD's website where you can see the table of contents as well as the first chapter. I always cringe at titles like this, because I expect Martha to be given a bad rap, but this book is very balanced, and easy to read. I think many of us could learn a lot about balance without ignoring who God created us to be. Some Mary's and some Martha's.

A Woman After God's Own Heart is the third option. Again on CBD's site you can read an excerpt, scan the table of contents, etc. This book looks like it has some great principles that apply to just about every one of us. If we choose this one, we might skip the chapters that are specific to having children or being married -- depending on the make-up of the class. But there seems to be a lot of great information that would apply to all of us.

Rhubarb Custard Cake

So last week at our Wednesday night Bible study, my friend DJ came in raving about a rhubarb custard cake she had helped a friend make. I asked that friend if she had any extra rhubarb -- hence the strawberry-rhubarb pie I made early this week that symoblized the arrival of summer. Then Wednesday I made the rhubarb custard cake to take to Bible study. I decided we all had to try it since DJ had raved so much about it -- and I just happened to have enough rhubarb left to make it.

YUMMY!!!

I have no idea where Beth originally got this recipe, but I had to share it with you since so many ladies from class asked for the recipe.

Rhubarb Custard Cake

1 yellow cake mix
4 cups rhubarb, chopped
1 cup sugar
1 cup whipping cream

Mix cake mix according to package instructions. Pour into greased 13 x9 pan. Sprinkle rhubarb and sugar over the top of the cake (I mixed the two together to make sure the rhubarb was coated). Pour whipping cream over the top. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden brown in 350 oven. Loosen sides and flip onto serving platter. Serve warm.

Can be served with whipping cream and mint.

Easy and oh so good! Enjoy.

Fasting this week

Hello Fellow Fasters,

First of all, let me say thank you for responding to the call to fast for the upcoming Karen Wheaton services. I am SO excited about the opportunity to join forces in prayer and fasting to usher in God's power!!!

I wanted to stress again the focuses of this time of fasting...to have an awakening to our individual purpose(s), to believe for great numbers of people to attend the services with life changing results, and for Bethel to be strengthened in unity and purpose.

I also wanted to see if any of you had anything in particular you would like the rest of us to be lifting up in our prayers during the fast and in the days to come. I will be praying that God's will be done in all of your lives, but would love to pray for each of you more specifically as you need and feel comfortable sharing. I believe that each of us lifting one another up throughout the day(s) on Wednesday will be very powerful.

Finally, if you have any questions regarding fasting, for example, what can and can't I eat?, please feel free to ask me and I'll do my best to answer. Tomorrow, I plan to send you a list of scriptures that you can meditate on during your fast if you like.

Patriarchs Update

We watched the session five video last night. WOW! God continues to have so much for us as we pursue Him and dive into this study. A couple random thoughts from the video:

Do I make other people hungry for my God?
Nothing in my life is random as a believer.
Jacob set out to find a wife and found God.
God intentionally sought him so He could become Jacob's God and not just the God of Abraham and Isaac.

Great Book for Teenagers!

I have been reading the most fascinating book this week. In about 40 minutes on Saturday I blew through the first 60 pages. This book is targeted at teenagers, but will resonate with many, many more. In my opinion, this book should be a graduation gift for all junior high and high school students. It phenomenal.

If you've been around the homeschool movement for any length of time, then you're probably familiar with Gregg Harris. If you've been in a bookstore since 1997, then you're familiar with I Kissed Dating Good-bye and Josh Harris.

Now it's time to meet sons and younger brothers Alex & Brett Harris. I first ran into them with their modesty survey and posted about it at Generation NeXt Parenting on February 20, 2007. Then I was given the twins' book Do Hard Things. Here's the official blurb...but keep reading for my take:

This book is incredible. Many of us have seen teens, young adults, even thirty-somethings who are floundering through life. They can't seem to get any traction. Frankly, this approach to life drives my crazy, because I live on the other extreme. The Harris twins pinpoint the problem as a plague of low expectations when we're teenagers. As a result, we aren't trained to push ourselves and ask how God can use us -- especially during our teen years.

The verse that motivates their ministry is I Timothy 4:12. I smiled when I saw that as it was my life verse until I was 30 and decided I might need a different verse since I wasn't exactly a youth anymore. I've often wondered what my parents did or didn't do that made me believe anything I wanted to do/be was possible if it lined up with God's Word and will. Telling them at 12 or 13 that I wanted to start college at 16 -- no problem. When I turned 16 and still wanted to do it, they marched me down to the community college and figured it out.

There was an expectation that everything was training. The teen years weren't a time to goof off. Instead, they were a time to prove myself and gain increasing independence as I proved myself faithful. Everything I've done, accomplished, am doing is a direct result of that philosophy.

So I find myself in a church that doesn't offer a Bible study I'm interested in. No problem. I'll offer to lead one. So I want to teach at a major Big Ten University. No problem, I'll fill-in until I earn a contract spot. So I want to write books. No problem. I'll read books and wait until God says go. Then I'll invest the time and energy to write the books and take the steps necessary to prepare myself as God opens doors.

In a sense this is exactly what Do Hard Things is about. It challenges teens to do intentionally do 5 kinds of hard things:

Things that are outside your comfort zone.
Things that go beyond what is expected or required.
Things that are too big to accomplish alone.
Things that don't earn an immediate payoff.
Things that challenge the cultural norm.

We'd all benefit from applying those principles to our lives. But how much better if we taught them to young people. I've talked about this book since starting it. Eric is lined up to read it. I'll be giving it as graduation gifts. And it will land in my children's hands by the time they are twelve, so we can fully discuss and apply these principles in their lives.

Women's Retreat

Last Night's Video

Last night's (week 3 video) was incredible and challenging. Since we know many of you had choir practice, we've made alternate plans for you to watch the movie. Next Wednesday night, March 26, there will be a special showing of the Beth Moore Video for Week 3 in the fireside room. If you missed for any reason, I encourage you to make the time to come watch it then. Then at 7 there will be worship, followed by the discussion of week four at the regularly scheduled time. Week four has some pretty amazing assignments. Genesis 24 in three lessons. Enough said :-)

This week at Bethel

This week the women's study on Wednesday night will watch the video for week two: the Approaching and Approachable God. It is a wonderful teaching. Next week we'll discuss the week three homework. The plan is to break into three smaller groups for the discussion.

Patriarchs

The Patriarchs study is going very well. Thanks to everyone who is coming consistently and participating. The week two homework has been amazing. Looks at Hagar and Sarah (wait till you get to this one! I'm still pondering it) And the video last night was great. If you know someone who doesn't have a workbook but still wants one, please let me know. I asked Heather to order an additional 5 last night. We've had the wonderful problem of having to reorder -- 3 times! That's never happened before.

And the retreat is in the works. It will be in April. And as soon as I confirm the date with Gina I will post it. I can tell you we will be at Twin Lakes this year, and the theme is INTENTIONAL LIVING. If you don't live your life intentionally, it will happen haphazardly. Come learn how to live YOUR life with God's purpose and power. The theme verse is Eph. 3:10.

This week in the Sunday School class we will start the last chapter of lies. Should be another good discussion.

Living in a Fog?

We had six or seven inches of snow on Friday -- and this morning it's all gone. Yesterday the temperature was well into the 40s, and the area was blanketed in a think fog. All day. We live far from San Francisco...yet, yesterday it felt like we'd somehow slipped across the Rockies and over to that part of California. This morning it's still foggy.

Sometimes life is like that. Everything is beautiful and pristine, washed white by a blanket of virgin snow. Then, wham, you find yourself squinting through a fog...trying to find your way to the road and then stay on it.

What do you tell yourself when lost in a fog? Sometimes it's a fog of self-doubt. Or impatience. Or a fog of depression and sadness.

I've done enough Bible studies to know that I shouldn't let my emotions control me. There's nothing productive or God-honoring in wallowing in emotions. While God created us with emotions, I am to master them. Because the heart is deceitful above all things. Yet walking through a blanket of fog makes it difficult to raise your eyes to the One who never changes. Who never fails. Who is always with us.

Instead, we so often lower our gaze and squint to see a foot or two in front of us. Yet how our perspective changes when we lift our eyes and focus on God.

So as I walk and drive through one more day of fog, I'm going to chose to focus on Him as many times as it takes until the fog clears.

Patriarchs and Retreat

This week we watched the first video to Patriarchs. Wow! And I hope you are digging into the study. Even in the first day, God was using it to speak to me, encourage me, exhort me, remind me who He is. If you commit to doing the homework, you will get so much meat from this study. I can't wait to meet with you on Wednesday and discuss the first week.

Also, plans are in the works for a retreat. It looks like it will either be the last weekend of March or very early April. Stay tuned -- but know that several ladies are hard at work already.

Wednesday Nights

Starting in three weeks, we will do Beth Moore's study on the Patriarchs. It is a video based study with the workbook. I can't wait to start this one. Stephanie Wetli and I will tagteam on this one. The videos were taped in the Holy Land, so it should be an incredible study as we dive into the roots of our faith.

It is 5 o'clock.... what is for supper? This is the stress I want to eliminate from our lives! We lead busy lives and the stress of facing a hungry family every night can be frustrating. We stare into the fridge and pantry and hope something will just jump out.... we need food and we need it now! Retreat?

I checked with Camp Tecumseh this week, and they have availability for us any weekend in March or the weekend of April 18. What I need to know is:

Is anyone interested in another retreat in 2008?
Can anyone help? I don't have the time to do everything I have in the past though I can still help and be involved?
What weekends work for people? I already know that there are at least two that I am out of town, and assume others have similar schedules.

Thankful Hearts

There's a Veggie Tales song about Thankful Hearts. One of the lines goes something like, "a thankful heart is a happy heart, I'm glad for what I have, that's an easy place to start..."

Let me wax philosophical for a moment here. I am a poli sci major after all. Somewhere along the road, as a nation we've lost the ability to be thankful for what we have. I remember seeing news clips where people on welfare state that cable tv is a staple, a necessity of their lives. It's an American way of life.

How often do we step back and cultivate an attitude of being thankful for what we have? Happy with what we have? Blessed with what God has granted?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines thankful as: Aware and appreciative of a benefit; grateful. The Random House Unabridged Dictionary compares thankful and grateful in the following way: Grateful indicates a warm or deep appreciation of personal kindness as shown to one: grateful for favors; grateful to one's neighbors for help in time of trouble. Thankful indicates a disposition to express gratitude by giving thanks, as to a benefactor or to a merciful Providence; there is often a sense of deliverance as well as of appreciation: thankful that one's life was spared in an accident; thankful for the comfort of one's general situation.

I want to cultivate a life that is grateful for what's been given to me. I drive a nice, dependable vehicle. Why should I covet what somebody else has? God has provided a wonderful job to Eric that in turn provides a great roof over our heads. The home is large, and allows us to host many different groups, something that is important to me. Why should I want for more? My closet is full of stylish clothes that fit. My bookshelves are lined with books I love and movies I enjoy. What more could I ask for.

Yet it's easy to slip into an attitude that covets the house my friends has on two acres in th ecountry. (Do I really want to live in the country?!?!? Me thinks the yard might be overwhelming). Or I think I need more clothes, more books, more fill in the blank here.

And as I raise my kids, this sense of entitlement to more is placed squarely in front of my face. I want to cultivate a spirit of thankfulness in them. A spirit that turns to their heavenly Father to provide all of their needs. A spirit that can distinguish between needs and wants. It's a challenge, but I want to rise to meet it.

So as Thanksgiving approaches here are a few more things I am thankful for:

A husband who provides very well for his family.
A husband who works hard so that we do not want for anything.
A God who provides all of our needs according to His riches and glory.
A home that more than adequately shelters us.
A home that can be a ministry tool as we open it up to others.
Vehicles that are dependable to get us to jobs and ministries.
A God who loves me without abandon, and who's mercies are new every morning.
A God of second chances.
A God who does not waste any experience that I have.

We'll do the last chapter in Bad Girls of the Bible. We'll be looking at the sinful woman who washed Jesus' feet with her tears. It should be a great discussion! This book has really given me some food for thought and reminded me that I could easily do the things that each of these women did. I hope you've enjoyed it, too.

Anyone Need a Break

Last night my husband was out of town for work, so I called a good friend. Ann and I are scrapbooking/crafty friends. You should see us pull out our tools and go to town slicing and dicing photos, cards, etc. One time she even crocheted. She is a multi-talented woman.

It had been several months since I let myself do anything creative other than writing.

I have to be careful because I get on these kicks and just can't help myself. Case in point: I do three albums at a time. One is the family album. One is Abigail's album. And one is Jonathan's album. Needless to say, if there was ever a fire, I'd have one aching back by the time I got all the albums out!

But in the push to write all these books on deadline, I've lost the ability to slow down. Okay, okay. Those of you who've known me are thinking, "And this is new how?!?!"

Even Sabrina, my dear writing buddy, was calling me on it Saturday. "Cara, we've got to schedule some writing breaks for you."

I know this is true. I really do.

But see if I step back, then I realize the family album is almost THREE YEARS behind. Eck! Now my fingers are itching to get that album caught up. I was HORRIFIED when I realized it was that bad. I have 100s of photos on my computer that I haven't printed, simply because I don't want to feel that far behind. Plausible deniability. If I can't see the photos, then they're really not late. We attorneys can make anything sound almost logical.

God calls us to rest.

I know it. I've read all the scriptures about Sabbath rests. But, to be brutally honest, I stink at taking them. I live with this sense of urgency that I can't explain.

I feel there is so much to do, that I have a hard time slowing down. That's why our vacation to North Carolina was tailor made. No internet. Turned off the cell phone -- most of the time. Even took three whole days off from writing -- then deadline fever kicked in again.

So how do you do it? Are any of you experts at finding balance? Even though my deadlines are technically behind me and my agent has told me to take my time, I feel this internal pressure building up again. One more contract. I only have one more contract to fulfill. Must write lots of proposals. Get these ideas down on paper. Pitch them to the right people. Let my agent work her magic.

I only have ten more years to pour into Abigail before she likely heads off to college. Jonathan wants to read, so must teach him 15 syllable words -- TODAY.

You get the picture. Help! And I can't wait for the overnight scrap on October 19 -- though I really need three straight days to get caught up!

Tucker's Miracle

While all of that was wonderful, the best part was catching up and seeing with our own eyes the miracle that Tucker Green is.

You see, in May, he unexplainably lost the ability to walk. Ever been a doctor’s mystery? Trust me, you don’t want to be. But that’s exactly where the Greens found themselves, when Tucker was run through a litany of tests and experts trying to find some cause. Instead, all they got were a list of things he didn’t have.

While he was in the wheelchair, Tucker would pray, and God would answer with a dream. Now these were specific dreams. The kind where He says in three days this will happen. And the wonderful, amazing thing is that God said in three days you’ll walk. And three days later, Tucker walked with a walker. They kept their plans to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Costa Rica. Tucker wanted to do the zipline, and even that morning, his dad thought he shouldn’t. But God had told Tucker he would do it, and he did. It was at that spot that Tucker began to walk on his own again.

Why do I share this story? Because it’s a story of the magnificence of God. A God who still does signs and wonders today.

But even more, because this could become the rock of remembrance in this ten-year-old’s life. This could become a moment that he clings to through the future storms of life, where he can say, I don’t care what my circumstances say, my God is bigger – He made me walk again when noone could explain what was wrong.

We each have those moments in our lives. Some more dramatic than other, but all there none the less. Those times we need to come back to – pull out the rock from our pocket and rub it between our fingers as we stare at the mountain in front of us. Pull out our dreams and fears and place them on an alter built of the stones from every time God has moved in our lives.

If you haven’t done it for awhile, find time and look back at what God has done in your life lately. I guarantee you will find His fingerprints all over the pages of your life. Even in the times you were positive He wasn’t there.

"...Keeping up with the Joneses." We're all familiar with the feeling of pressure that comes when someone we know gets a new house/car/haircut/dog/whatever. :) We're living in a society that says we "are" what we drive/eat/wear/etc. Additionally, we're expected to be at the forefront of all these trends or we are Undesirable. Unworthy. Unacceptable. Don't you just feel exhausted when you think of trying to live up to those kinds of expectations?!! Members of the early church found their identity in Christ and in community with one another. Read Acts 4:32-35. "There were no needy persons among them," because "they shared everything they had." Wow. These Christians viewed possessions as tools, not status symbols. "Lord, take what I've got and use it to meet the needs of those around me!" How many of us pray like that? Their generosity resulted in ALL the needs around them being met. (Again: wow.) Now, read the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5. Mull this one over: What might have motivated Sapphira to agree to lie about the sale price of their property when they donated it (the profit) to the church?

Moving Forward

My parents visited last week. I always love having them come. We simply enjoy each other. And I know Dad will always have a new song for me to listen to. He goes through favorite songs like some people go through chocolate.

A few weeks ago his favorite song was Lifesong by Casting Crowns. (I tell you, he is a cool Dad!) Then it was something else. Now it’s Moving Forward by Free Chapel. In a few weeks, I just about guarantee it’ll be something new. But for right now, it’s Moving Forward. If you’ve never heard it, hie thee to iTunes and buy it. It is amazing. The lyrics have run through my mind as if on a loop for the last week. If the words could truly work into my spirit to the point that I believed them completely, they would be life changing.

Have anything in your past that you regret? Anything happen to you that impacted you even though it wasn’t your fault? Feel out of control and hating it?

Then sing with me.

“Not going back, moving ahead
I’m here to declare to you my past is over
In you all things are made new
Surrender my life to Christ
Moving, moving forward”

I love it. All thing are made new in Christ. We all know that verse. But do we expect Him to really do that? Or do we get in the way? Or do we believe He’ll do that for everyone but us? That somehow we aren’t worthy of that promise?

“You make all things new
You make all things new
You make all things new
I will follow you forward.”

I know there are areas in my life that I need Christ to breath new life into. I need the promise that He does make all things new. That I won’t look back, but will move forward. Regardless of the past. Regardless of the present. Because I trust Him with the future. And I will follow. Wherever He leads.

The past is over. The future lies ahead. Move with me into that. Whatever Christ has for us, let’s surrender and say, “Yes, Lord.” Throw your arms wide. Say Lord take me. Whatever You can use, keep. Whatever You can’t, transform as You make me new.

Let’s walk into the future with Him, one step at a time. I can’t wait to see what He does.

The Woman at the Well

Have you ever felt judged by people who aligned themselves with the church? Ever felt "less than"? How did you handle it? Avoidance? Confrontation? Begrudging acceptance? A gentle attempt at reconciliation? Who should reach out first and why?

Ask God to give you fresh eyes as you read this familiar story. I have really enjoyed the spin that Liz Curtis Higgs puts on the stories. Humorous, but peels back layers of the story.

Don’t you love it? I don’t know about you, but I can completely relate to having times in my life where I was bored enough to let myself be distracted. Fortunately, by the grace of God I didn’t act out like Potipher’s Wife, but that sure doesn’t mean I couldn’t. That’s why I think this chapter is so good. Bored to Distraction...that's the way Liz Curtis Higgs titles Potipher's wife. This week on Wednesday night we'll look at chapter two of Bad Girls of the Bible and examine the scenario between Potipher's Wife and Joseph.

As with any story there are two sides. Read the story in Genesis, and come to class ready to discuss what steps, if any, you think both Potipher's Wife and Joseph could have taken to avoid the situation.

Have you ever found yourself bored to distraction? What are the hazards you have to guard against in those times?

Here's another question to consider... We only know this woman as Potipher's wife. How do you think that made her feel? Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were known as so-and-so's wife, mother, daughter, employee, etc.? What kind of dangers does that set up?

Thoughts on Eve

Shirley's fantastic study on the fruit of the spirit wrapped up this week with a lively discussion on the Holy Spirit. I love to see women discussing the deep things of God with such earnestness!

Hey, y'all. Crazy long time without a post. Sorry about that!

Next Friday, June 15th, there is a fellowship night at Linda Lee Allen's home. We'll be having an outdoor picnic, and it will be a great time to get together with friends and make some new friends.

Also, Stephanie Wetlie and I will be leading the next Wednesday night study when Shirley's fabulous study on the Fruit of the Spirit ends. I brought Seven options last Wednesday, and will bring them to Sunday school, too. The front-runners right now are Finding Favor with the King by Tommy Tenney (a study of principals he takes from the book of Esther -- but not the novel -- though that's really good, too); Bad Girls of the Bible by Liz Curtis Higgs; and Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

Other options include Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanne Weaver, B.L.E.S.S.E.D.: Discover God's Bigger Dream for you by Robyn Henk, a Willowcreek study on service, and a Women of Faith study Living a Life of Balance. Stephanie teased me about having a subconscious theme as I pulled books from Carpenter's Son's shelves.

Lessons Learned in a Shelter

This has been one of those springs. You know, the kind when you have to deal with issues you never thought in a million years would confront you.

Tuesday our Mason chased her last bunny rabbit. She was our first child and the only dog our children had owned. We often joked that we started to have kids because we hadn’t killed the puppy and she’d actually turned out really well.

On top of the miscarriage, losing Mason was a lot to deal with for Abigail and Jonathan. In many, many ways, this loss was much more real. They’d wrestled with Mason, hugged on her, taken her for walks. The baby was an idea, an exciting one but still an idea of things to come.

Our house has seemed horribly empty this week without someone to greet us each time we came home. So yesterday afternoon, we headed to a local shelter. We didn’t intend to bring home a puppy, but we did. Isn’t she cute?

As we spent time at the shelter, I was reminded of why I am so glad that God loved each of us enough to send His Son just for me. Or you. Or your neighbor. If He’d selected who to love like we selected our puppy, it would be a truly scary world.

We left a lot of great dogs behind. We only had room for one. God has unending room for each of us in heaven.

We didn’t want to spend a lot of time retraining an older dog who might have quirks we couldn’t quickly identify. God delights in teaching us about Himself and pruning our character.

Some of the dogs were too big. Or too energetic. Or too needy. With two small kids, we carefully weighed the personalities and other issues of the dogs. This one had no training and was two. That meant too much work.

This one was bigger than Jonathan. This one had too much energy and while trainable would scare Jonathan. Ahh. This one seems perfect.

Fortunately, God doesn’t require perfection from us. Instead, He knows that the only way to become perfect is through His Son Jesus. It’s only when I’m covered in His blood that I can stand in the throne room of heaven. Not because of a single thing I’ve done. But because when God looks at me, He sees Jesus. He also sees me as His perfect creation. And that’s enough.

And I’m so grateful. Because on my own, I could never measure up.

April 28th- Youth Group Annual Garage Sale-- Clean out your clutter and give it to the Youth Group on Thursday and Friday April 26-27. They will turn that trash into treasure to help fund many Youth Group Activities. Please encourage your teens to help out with this activity.

May 5th-- First Bethel Blood Drive. We will have a blood drive with the Indiana Regional Blood Center. It will be from 9am-12noon. You can sign up for a donation time at the Welcome Center. It will be held in the 'Commons' on that Saturday. Please help get the word out about this and plan to donate your blood that day. Good Friday

It's the beginning of the most important weekend for those of us who serve Christ. Really for the whole world. This weekend we remember the incredible sacrifices that Jesus made when He left His heavenly home and came to earth. The Son of God, now also the Son of Man. Wholly God and wholly man. Only God could do that.

Thirty-three years later He makes the supreme gift when He chooses to die for each of us. I am still humbled each time I think about the reality that He would have died for just me or just you. But he did. His disciples and followers must have been so confused.

But three days later He rose. You see, anyone could die. But only God could conquer death and come back to life. And with death He conquered everything. Our sins. Sickness. Strongholds in our lives.

So this Easter weekend, even as you celebrate with eggs and bunnies, don't forget that the real reason for this celebration is that Jesus came and died that we could have eternal life with Him.

Please pray for me as I start edits on Double Image to get it ready to resubmit to an editor. And as I buckle down to work on a couple legal proposals. It's time to push past whatever's been holding me back and get back into the writing. I covet your prayer support as I do this! I'll also start writing Sandhill Dreams after some on-site research in Nebraska. And I'll teach Business Law at Purdue again starting in the middle of May. Life is never dull around here!

Trianing Lessons

I’m in the middle of training for the Indianapolis mini-marathon (along with crazies Stacey Wisdom and Nicole Rheume). No, not a full marathon. A mini one – just 13.1 miles. But plenty far I think.

During law school I had a couple friends who ran marathons, and then and there I decided I should do the same thing. Law school had pushed my brain as far as it would go. A marathon would push my body as far as it could go. This from the girl who HATES to sweat.

Then life happened. I got pregnant. Last semester of law school while working full time with a baby. We moved. I got pregnant. Even less time and inclination to run. Then we got a treadmill. Then I put off running because I wanted to get pregnant. Then after a year, my husband and I got tickets to run the mini together. Then I got pregnant. Then I miscarried. And then I started running. And running. And running. Nights like tonight, I’m not even sure what I’m running from or to. I’m just running.

Now Eric's got a pinching pain in his lower back and hasn’t been able to train in two weeks. I may be running this on my own. And I don’t want to. Why? I’m afraid I won’t finish. It’s easier to stop now than to keep running without accountability.

Isn’t that like our lives?

We spend so much time running from or to we don’t even know what. And then when we get close to the destination we stop. Paralyzed that something will go wrong.

So much of my life right now is outside my control. I’m writing which is a very capricious business. I’m homeschooling. And I’m training for this crazy mini-marathon. And this control-freak can’t control anything other than my response.

So I chose to do what the Psalmist said: I delight to do YOUR will, Oh God. (Shirley, that was for you!) And I’ll put one foot in front of the other, day after day, step after step, mile after mile. Knowing that God has it all in control, and that’s enough for today.

Dreaming with God and Amazing Grace

Last night my mom and I went to see Amazing Grace. It has me inspired and ready to run to the library to track down biographies on William Wilberforce and William Pitt. I left the theater thinking, "God, can You use me like that?"

But you know what? William Wilberforce had a dream that took YEARS to see to fruition. And those weren't years sat waiting passively. His health was wrecked. His reputation was questioned. He and his team gathered all kinds of evidence about the evils of the slave trade. And after fifteen years of fighting he was ready to give up. I don't know about you, but after that kind of energy investment and personal cost, I might be tempted to give up, too.

But got sent people to encourage him. And others with fresh ideas on how to proceed. They went from expecting 100% change at one time to willingness to chip away at the evil. Then they were ready to play the game. It really made me think of the parallels to abortion in our country.

Also, Dreams don't just happen. Sometimes it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice on our parts to accomplish what God has placed in our hearts.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, go. But only go if you're willing to be inspired and challenged. We don't have to make a choice between loving God and changing the world. When He plants a dream in our heart...we can do both!

Seven Insider Tips for Pioneer Parents: Part One

My friend Mary DeMuth is the author of two novels and a couple parenting books. She will be on Family Life Today March 22 and 23 and gave me permission to post this article about pioneer parenting. I hope it blesses you today!

Some of us grew up in stable, Christ-loving homes. Others did not. What happens when people from difficult upbringings want to raise their children in a Christian home? How do we pioneer a new path for our children?

Pioneer Parents are parents who don’t want to duplicate the homes they were raised in. They share many common traits, the most common being fear. They ask themselves questions like:

Will the hurtful words my parents said to me fly out of my mouth in a moment of anger?
Will I repeat my parents’ mistakes?
How will I parent if I’ve had no positive, godly example?
Why, when I read Christian parenting books, do I feel like the author can’t relate to me?
How do I protect my children from possible negative influence of my parents without harming their relationship?

As a Pioneer Parent, these questions have swirled around in my paranoid head ever since I birthed my first child. Thirteen years later, sometimes they still haunt me. How do we break free from harmful parenting patterns? How do we build a Christian foundation in our homes if we’ve had no example? Here are seven tips:

1. Read parenting books with a caveat of grace.
When I first became a mom, I read every Christian parenting book I could find, determined not to repeat my past. I highlighted words until the pages glowed yellow. Instead, with every book I read, I berated myself for not being a perfect Christian mother. Instead of letting the words encourage me to improve my parenting, I would shun myself for not parenting correctly. I didn’t offer myself grace.

Eventually, I learned to see the books as kindly companions instead of angry Pharisees, pointing out my failures. I had to remind myself to be gentler toward me—a sinner in need of grace—and understand afresh that God delighted in me, sang over me. He was not watching me read parenting books and mumbling, “Well, I sure hope she bucks up and parents better after reading this.” No, God, as I’ve had to learn, comes alongside me, cheering me when I fail, and giving me confidence as a parent.

2. Find or observe a parenting mentor.
Of all the campaigns I’ve initiated to try to improve my parenting, finding a mentor has been the most effective. I have learned the importance of engaging parents who are raising stable, well-adjusted children. The most rewarding parenting-mentor relationship I experienced happened on walks with my friend Kathy. She had two grown children who were serving Christ full time. Pushing a double stroller as I walked a mile or two around the neighborhood with her, I peppered her with questions, she listening and praying and offering advice.

I’ll admit it’s not easy to find a mentor like Kathy. If you can’t find one, remember that mentors can come in surprising packages. I’ve been “mentored” by kind mothers in the grocery store who answer my questions patiently, by grandparents who get on the floor and play with their grandchildren, by friends who share their trials and victories with me. The most surprising mentor in my life has been my eldest daughter who is now old enough to baby-sit. Watching her kind patience with toddlers inspires me to be a more patient mommy.

3. Say, “I’m sorry.”
Pioneer parents—and all parents for that matter—make mistakes. We say painful words that we heard our parents say—words that once stung us, words that now sting our children. The best way to disarm sin is to admit it. No parents are perfect. Trying to appear sinless (particularly during a bout of anger) causes children to worry about how they “made” mommy or daddy be mean. Confessing our sins to our children and asking their forgiveness opens the door to communication, de-escalates heated arguments, and shows children that even parents need the restorative forgiveness of Jesus. . . .

Dreaming with God

Dreaming Big

Do you dream? No, not at night – at least not only then. But dream about what your life could be? About ways God could use you, your kids, your family?

Sometimes we run so fast through life that we forget how to stop and just be. To step back from everything we are doing and ask God how much more He wants us to do and be. Just because He wanted me to do something today doesn’t mean that’s what I’m supposed to do for the rest of my life. But is we don’t stop and dream, we’ll be stuck in a rut. It might be a good rut, but if it’s not God’s best, it’s not what I want.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines dream as many things including a strongly desired goal or purpose or something that fully satisfies a wish.

I like that. A strongly desire goal or purpose. Sometimes we become afraid to dream because we’re afraid it won’t come true. Or we’ll miss God. Or we’ll run right past Him in pursuit of something that might not be from Him or in His timing.

However, the Scripture is clear that where there is no vision the people perish. Proverbs 29:18. If I don’t have a vision for how my day will go, it usually goes nowhere. If I don’t have a vision for how I will discipline my children when the need arises, I often regret the way it happens. If my husband and I don’t have a vision for our finances, we can easily spend out of control. But where we have a vision and a plan, we accomplish things we didn’t know were possible.
The same principle carries over to other areas of our lives. Psalm 37:4 says that God will give us the desires of our hearts when we delight in Him. You know why? I think it’s because the closer we get to Him and His heart, the more we will long for the things in our lives that He wants in our lives.

And He plants dreams in our hearts. You know what I’m talking about. That idea or thing in your heart that you’re scared to tell anybody about because it is so precious and personal to you that you can’t stand the thought of somebody telling you that you’re crazy. But it won’t die. Even when God say not now, He blows just enough breath on the dream that the embers don’t burn out.

One of my long held dreams was to be a writer. I have loved books for as long as I can remember. And since I was about 13 I have wanted to write. For years, God would say, “Not yet.” But I’d read book, I’d read craft books, and I’d hold on to the dream. After all He never said, No – just not yet.

Last week I learned my publisher was going to send me two more contracts. That makes three contracts in six months. Only God could accomplish something like that. And now He’s whispering that it’s time for my dream to grow.

What’s He been whispering in your heart? Whether it’s a dream for your family, for your marriage, for you personally, I encourage you to pull it out this week. Blow the dust off it, and ask God about it. Then wait for His words and direction to whisper in your heart.
Let’s believe God for those dreams that feel like miracles!

Bible Study Hour Options Starting Sunday

Hey, Ladies.

It's the beginning of a new quarter, and I wanted to make sure you knew about some of the great Bible Study Hour options available to you. Going across the chart in the bulletin insert:

1) A Study of Joshua, led by yours truly. In this study we will examine how God trained Joshua for the task of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land and equipped him to walk into the inheritance. Joshua came from slavery, but God didn't let that slow him down. I'm really excited about this one.

2) Driven by Eternity, led by Marleen Troyer and Linda Lee-Allen. These ladies are PASSIONATE about this message. He has put eternity in their hearts...Ecclesiastes 3:11. His coming is certain and His reward is with Him. Are you missing the point of your life? Do you want your life to count today and forever?

3) Growing Together in Spiritual Intimacy, led by Sue Brust. This is an expansion of the marriage class which Sue has been leading this quarter.

4) Women Seeking God, led by Gina Deere. This quarter the women's study will focus on exploring our inheritance and expand on the themes of the retreat. What is our inheritance and how do we live this out in our everyday lives?

Tools of Our Inheritance

Hi ladies! I’ve got to be honest with you – I’m not entirely sure where God is leading me in this message. But I can tell you that the journey toward this exclamation point of His has been incredible…humbling at times…but altogether amazing! He is good! I know in the flyer that was mailed out that my message teetered along the lines of Fear or Faith…but God has been stirring something else inside of me – and I’m still discerning which way He would have me go. At this point, there are 2 messages He is laying on my heart – and I thought the one was for the youth, and the other for the women’s retreat…but after giving the one to the youth on Sunday, it’s still burning and growing in my heart. Perhaps in His infinite wisdom, He is merging the two!

On a very basic level – my message will be more about keys to our inheritance rather than what our actual inheritance is. These keys are faith, and finding the knowledge of God. I want us to begin to understand what the knowledge of God is – Proverbs 2 tells us that we are to be searching it out and finding it. The knowledge of God goes way beyond simply comprehending that He exists, or a verbal or intellectual agreement that He is a person. It’s something much deeper than that, it’s something that goes on in the core of our being and transforms our entire lives. I believe (because the Lord has shown it to me!) the answer to finding the knowledge of God is in His Word – and that on the whole, His Bride has lost her love for the Word. We can not begin to understand or effectively use the other pieces of our inheritance until we understand this…it’s about knowing God’s heart. His Word is the lens through which we can begin to comprehend and understand not only who He is, but what He has planned for our lives…our inheritance as His daughters.

I hope you are seeking Him during this time leading up to the retreat. Don’t wait in expectation for March 9-10th for God to show up and do something amazing in your lives – He’s waiting RIGHT NOW for you to ask Him to do that! Expect amazing things from Him every second of your day. Ask Him to even now be preparing your hearts for what He would have for you during those two days. Let’s press in and meet Him on a more intimate level than ever before!

Chick Fellowship Nights

I am now acting as the Coordinator for the 'Chick-Flick nites'(or Fellowship Nites) that we have on a regular basis for Bethel ladies and visitors. If you haven't attended one, these are evenings where the ladies of Bethel come together to fellowship and build friendships.

I am scheduling Hostesses for a Night(Usually the third Friday of each month--but this is flexible). If you are interested in hosting, please let me know; ...if you need ideas for a night let Cara or myself know. We can help with that especially if you are able to host it at your home.

Usually, the ladies who attend help to bring goodies to eat, we just need hostesses....

The service was great this morning. God delights in the praises of His people.

Few things:

1) The Tuesday Morning Bible Study continues this week at 9:30 am. All women are invited, but remember there is no childcare. This group is studying The Battle Field of the Mind.

2) The Wednesday Night Bible Study meets at 7 pm in the Fireside Room at Bethel. This week we will continue to look at the Fruit of the Spirit, Joy. There is homework this week: "What gives you joy, and what scripture do you have that supports it?" And feel free to come for prayer at 6:30.

3) The early bird deadline for the Women's retreat is February 15th. So get those forms in to the church office.

4) Scrapbooking/craft night this weekend. Come for as little or much as you can. I'll be in and out since Friday night was the only night that worked to have a group of friends over for dinner. You don't need to stay for everything...

5) Next quarter the women's Bible hour class on Sunday mornings will build on the retreat theme of Our Inheritance. Gina Deere will host the class, and it sounds fantastic. Wish I could be part of it!

I've had some questions about who Roberta is. she is a long time friend of Pastor Ted and Sue's from Nebraska. She is also a school psychologist who speaks at many events. A couple years ago she spoke at Bethel at one of the spring teas. I was out of town, but heard I missed a great teaching. I am excited to hear what God has placed on her heart for the women of Bethel.

I'm also asking the others who will share at the retreat to give us some teasers over the next few weeks. So stay tuned.

God's given us each something to share...so mark March 9-10th on your calendars and beginning praying with expectation about what God will do in you and through you at the retreat.

Clarification on Scrap Event

Ladies,

Due to many questions I have received, I wanted to clarify that the Scrapbook/Hobby All-Nighter is open to all ladies. If you do not do any crafts at all, but would like to come for the fellowship only; then please come!

The cost for the evening is $10.00 and a snack to share. You can come and stay as late as you would like. This is an all ladies event and we want you to come and get to know other ladies both from Bethel and in our community.

The primary craft for the Night is Scrapbooking, however we will have ladies there who will be quilting, crocheting, and doing photo scanning/restoration. It is fun to come and see what the other ladies are 'into'.

I love the heart I see God developing in the women of Bethel as a group. And that only reveals itself as we, individuall, dive deeper into Him, and refuse to settle for the same relationship with Him today that we had with Him yesterday, 5 years ago or fourty years ago. I don't know about you, but I always want to be learning more about Him and how to trust Him more completely.

So whether you're participating in Sunday School, a Bible Study, reading through the Bible in 90 days or whatever speed on your own. Keeping looking for Him. Searching hard after Him and believing His promises. It's like a treasure hunt. A grand, fun adventure.

And sign up for the retreat coming up on March 9 and 10th at Camp Tecumseh. God is putting some awesome words on women's hearts to share with you. Words about what our inheritance in Him is, How to step away from fear and to all He has for you, Dreaming with God, etc. It's going to be awesome.

I'm finally getting to a point that I can see areas I can break out and let people help me with various parts of women's ministry. I know. You're thinking, "It's about time, Cara."

Well, since that's what you're thinking, I'm sure you'll be ready to jump in and help with one of these areas....or fill in your own. Just leave a comment or let Heather or me know that you're ready to step up and serve.

1) Lead a Bible study or small group for women. (don't worry, I can help take the mystery out of this. Seriously, if I can do this -- many of you can, too.)

2) Lead Sunday School for a quarter -- or a month -- or a week.

3) Coordinate the Chick Nights. I have a list of women who have said they would host one. I just need someone with a bit of time to call and get them on the calendar.

4) Host a Chick Night. The sky's the limit on what you can do. Let me know you're interested and I'll help you come up with a theme, etc.

5) I'm sure there are a host of fabulous ideas that you have. Let us know what they are. You never know when we'll tell you to run with it!

Ladies, we need you

Ladies.. You just don't know what you don't know. We have so many ladies at Bethel that are going through some difficult things right now!

Please, Please lift each other up in prayer! We do not have to know all the details, the Lord knows. In time some may share with you what is happening in their lives-- remember it is a treasure of the heart when someone opens up to share with you. Treat what you know in that manner(as a treasure). Most importantly..pray! We need each other and we need your prayers.

Think of ladies you know and begin today to lift each other up. It is the best thing we can do for each other.

God, Where are You?

Do you ever feel the need to scream that at the heavens? I'm there. Right Now. As I type.

This fall I was visiting a church back in Nebraska and heard a sermon/word about standing in the middle of a crowded fair. Instead, of having fun, we're standing there frantically spinning and looking for our Daddy.

I know God would not bring me here to leave me. But at the moment I'm having a very hard time seeing Him. It doens't mean He's not here. It just means I can't feel Him.

Anyone relate?

I know the promises. He will never leave me or forsake me. He prepares the way for me. He is my shelter. He hides me in the shadow of His wings. It doesn't mean there isn't pain and questions. By the time many of you read this, hopefully my current challenge will be resolved. But it has sent me back to my knees to see just how quickly I can go from calm and assured to desperately looking for my Daddy. For assurance. To know that I'm not alone. To know that He sees me and cares. And to know I have not been abandoned.

Retreat Update

We had a retreat planning meeting last night. I am so excited about what God is putting on our hearts to share.

The retreat will start Friday March 9th with registration at 5 p.m. We'll wrap up around 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The theme will be coming into our inheritance as daughters of the King. As we grow in faith and in knowledge of who He is and who we are, then we can begin to walk in the things He has for us now. There is so much He has for us. Are you ready to dive into Him? I know I am! I want more than I've ever experienced of Him! I want to dream big dreams with Him. Live a life that impacts eternity for His glory.

Plan now to join us at the retreat as we seek the heart of God!

Have you ever gone through circumstances in your life where you have had to truly learn to trust in all that the Lord has for you? Not only trust but then be obedient to what he wants from you?

That is where I am.

There are different situations for each of us, and I do not know what your current situation is; God has asked us to Trust in Him, (Prov. 3:5- Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding). as the scripture in Proverbs tells us, we are to trust in Him, and not depend on what we can understand.

We think we know and have all the facts about situations, but then as times goes on we often learn 'what we did not know'(our understanding).

We are to wait on God.(Psalm 14:27 Wait! on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He will strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord).

Think about this, while we are waiting on God, he is making our hearts stronger, and this my friend takes courage!

If you are at all like me, I am an active person and waiting is the last thing I want to do for any situation! So what do you do while you wait? In a waiting room I might be reading a book or talking with someone.

Think about this, while we are waiting on the Lord, we can read His word(the Bible) and talk to Him!(pray). This helps to give us more insight into what is is the Lord wants for us. It helps to strengthen us. Wow, I am all for that!

Cutting Words

When I'm in the middle of writing a manuscript, I watch the word count like a hawk. I have excel spreadsheets that I plug updated numbers into constantly. I like the forward sense of progress. The movement toward the end goal.

This last week or so, I've been doing the reverse. An editor requested a complete manuscript that to fit her house's guidelines needed to lose 22,000 excess words. 22,000! At first, that number seemed overwhelming. But I like the book, and want to give it a chance, so if that meant cutting then I would cut.

This afternoon, after spending three hours at Panera, I finished the first run through. Of the 22,000, 18,000 have been cut. A mere three thousand to go. Oh and I need to add a short scene or two.

You know that whole two steps forward, one step back approach to writing.

I've learned I can tighten my writing. Even the parts I really like can be triaged and read better as a result.

I also know that while, I'd rather write a book to target than cut it, I can cut. And that's a good thing to know.

Now, I'll let it sit a day or two, then read it and cut one last time. Then time to send that baby out into the big world. But more on that tomorrow.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study

Hello Ladies!

I want to encourage each of you to come to the Tuesday Morning Bible Study at Shirley's House.

It begins at 9:30am, but come a few minutes early to chat and have coffee etc.(9:15am).

We have been having an awsome time getting into God's word and finding out how He wants us to live. For people like me, that means finding out where I need to give more control over to God, and let Him do a work in me. It is truly an awsome time.

A Time to Reflect on God's Fruit in Your Life--
Insight for Living

Just before His death and resurrection, Jesus revealed that the secret of growing God's fruit is in being at home with Him. That's the true definition of the familiar word abide. This is how Jesus describes what that means in John 15:5: "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing."

Spiritual fruit is not the result of self-effort. You grow more of God's fruit not when you try harder, but when you stay connected to the Source. When you abide in Christ, you invite Him to live with you each day and reproduce His character in you. God's character at work in you looks like:

LOVE: This is God's agape, love that selflessly seeks the highest good of the other person. God's love begins in the mind, not the emotions, as His Spirit within us prompts His agape to grow stronger each day.

JOY: Joy as a fruit of the Spirit is a settled confidence that because God controls the details of your life, you can trust Him in any circumstance and experience His life in abundant excess! Joy gives you a reason to smile.

PEACE: The unshakable, inner calm you experience when your mind and heart are at rest because you are trusting fully in Christ. Peace comes only when you decide to take God at His Word.

PATIENCE: A fruit of the Spirit that means to be "long-tempered," the opposite of short-fused irritability. Patience is the ability to wait on God because you know He is working all things for your good and His glory.

KINDNESS: The Spirit's fruit that braids mercy and grace, humility and gentleness all together. Kindness leads you to give grace, be humble, and think of others before yourself.
We don't grow the fruit of His Spirit---His love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness---is the result of His work. We can however ready our hearts like a farmer does his field. Prepared, weeded, watered, we wait for His growth. And slowly, almost imperceptibly, as we invite Him to grow His fruit, we'll see the new growth.

A few things this week:

1) Shirley's Bible study on the Fruits of the Spirit starts Wednesday night at 7 p.m. I cannot wait to learn from her!

2) Beth Nagel will lead Sunday School this week on Hannah and loving children (Beth, I'll email the notes to you tomorrow!)

3) Please pray for the retreat team as we prepare to meet in the next week. I am excited to see what God is putting on each of our hearts to share with the women. Pray also that He will clear your schedule so you can attend, and that the women He wants to minister will be there. He is so good.

4) Our small group is reading through the Bible in 90 Days. I know DJ is doing this as well. How are you starting the New Year with a fresh commitment to Him? He may not call you to do something crazy like we are, but He is calling you to more of Him. Are you willing to follow?

Wow! It's already the third. Yikes!

A few quick notes:

Sunday School this week will be chapter three in Women Like Us. It is a look at Abigial and her marriage.
This week is the week of prayer, so even if you can't attend at church make some time to dedicate to prayer about the coming year.
The Women's Retreat is coming up March 9 & 10th. We'll start distributing materials soon, but reserve the dates and look for more informaton shortly.

It's the beginning of a New Year. What are some of your resolutions for growing in your relationship with God? Our small group (even if it's only Eric and me) is going to read through the Bible in 90/180 days. I can't think of a better way to start than diving into His word. What about you?

Hey, ladies.

On Sunday December 17, Donna Coon will lead Sunday school. The class will be on a topic she chooses, so if you have the book you can take the week off and we'll pick up in it again on December 31st.

Today we discussed the Samaritan Woman at the well as well as Mary and Martha. You know what is so encouraging to me? That God takes us where we are because He sees what we will become with Him in our lives. The Samaritan woman had made such a mess of her life, but Jesus still sought her out. She didn't even have to go look for Him. Wow!

And between Luke 10:38-41 and John 12, I take great comfort in the fact that Jesus didn't completely change Martha (or Mary for that matter). Instead, He softened both of them. Martha still served but without holding it against Mary for not helping. And Mary still worshipped extravagently.

God is good. So rejoice in how He made you this holiday season!

Sorry for the lack of posts this week, ladies. It's been...a week. Oh well, He is still God and He is good!

For Sunday School, we will cover the first lesson in the Women Like Us: Wisdom for Today's Issues. For those who don't have the book yet, I"ll pick up a few more at Carpenter's Son tomorrow.

And this Wednesday we will start going through Why a Manger by Brock and Bodie Thoene. Rumor has it Family Christian Store does not carry it, but Carpenter's Son has it for $2.99. Let's spend the next couple weeks exploring the meaning behind the season.

In January Shirley Sivolla will lead a Wednesday night class on the fruits of the spirit. She's developed and taught it in the Tuesday morning Bible study. I have heard wonderful things about it and am excited about participating in the study. I can think of a few fruits of the spirit that I need more of in my life!

As I'm plotting a new book, I've been thinking about what it means that God is the God who sees me. He sees ME. Wow! I am so worthy, but becuase of Jesus I am worthy to come before Him.

As you prepare your hearts for the season, here's the story behind the popular carol the 12 Days of Christmas. I knew that it had been used to teach children about the canons of the faith when it had to be hidden. Thanks to DJ for forwarding this for us.

During this important time of year we celebrate the birth of God’s Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, Who died for us and rose again and Whom we’ll all eventually meet. Some of us sooner than later. Are you ready?Walk into any big store, and it’s great to hear Christmas carols. The popular carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” has hidden references to the basic teachings of the Faith. In the 16th century, during religious wars in England, music and poetry were often used to promote politically incorrect teachings to children. Secretly. Thus each of the “days” represents an aspect of the Christian Faith that was important for children to learn.The English wrote carols, but the Puritans suppressed these religious songs. After Christmas was restored in England, festive songs praising feasting and good will developed. “The Twelve Days of Christmas” became popular as a song to teach the doctrines of the faith. Here’s the hidden message.

The “true love” refers to God the Father Who in love sent His only Begotten Son to be our Savior. The “me” receiving the presents is every believer. The “partridge in a pear tree” is Jesus Christ, Whose birthday we celebrate on Dec. 25, the first “day” of Christmas. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge that feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings as was Christ’s sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: “Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered you under my wings, as a hen does her chicks, but you would not have it so....”
Two Turtle Doves. The Old and New Testaments, which together bear witness to God’s self-revelation in history and the creation of believers to proclaim His Story of Salvation to the world.
Three French Hens. The Three Theological Virtues: 1. Faith, 2. Hope, and 3. Charity.
Four Calling Birds. The Four Gospels: 1. Matthew, 2. Mark, 3. Luke and 4. John, which proclaim the Good News of God’s reconciliation of the world to Himself in Jesus Christ.
